You Need to Upgrade Your Builder-Grade Windows

February 20, 2022

When you’re buying a new home, it’s easy to overlook the builder-grade windows that are currently installed. Who could blame you? You’re too busy falling in love with the floorplan, the beautiful kitchen, and the fantastic upgrades in the master bathroom.

You might be thinking that they are just windows and not too much about them will change how your house looks or feels.

But trust us – builder-grade windows are low quality and can make your home feel drafty. With upgraded windows, not only will you see the difference in their beauty, but you’ll also see a difference in your energy bill.

What are builder-grade windows?

Builder-grade windows are windows that the home builder usually installs. They’re economical, easy to install and maintain, and available in a variety of styles.

But that is where the benefits end. In reality, they typically have a lower quality frame, glass, and overall construction.

This means they’re more prone to failing than upgraded windows.

However, the benefit is that they’re cheap. When a builder is building a home, there are so many components to consider (kitchen appliances, bathroom fixtures, flooring, etc.) that windows can, and often do, get overlooked.

The result is that a lower quality window is installed throughout the house.

With Cheap Windows Comes Problems

Yes, inexpensive is good, but not necessarily cheap. Windows are one of those things we refer to as “you get what you pay for.”

With cheap, builder-grade windows, you lose the benefits of energy efficiency and comfort that come with high-quality products.

And in some cases, these low-cost windows can increase your heating and cooling costs by up to $300 per year by letting in cold drafts or hot air through cracks around the window frame that are too big to seal effectively.

That’s because when it’s sweltering outside, warm air inside will rise past a poorly sealed window to escape out into the cooler outdoor air, while when it’s colder outside than inside, cool air inside will settle down below a poorly sealed window and seep back in.

In addition to lacking efficiency, they’re also poorly built.

This type of window is cheaply made and will start to deteriorate after some time. The vinyl frames become brittle and break easily, while the plastic content breaks down from the sun’s UV rays. In other words, these windows are unable to withstand any weather change or season.

The seals will usually fail relatively quickly, leaving moisture to build up between the panes of glass. When these fail it is both unsightly and inefficient.

Just because your home was built with builder-grade windows, it doesn’t mean you have to settle. You do have some other options.

How Long Do Builder Grade Windows Last?

Builder-grade windows are more likely to last anywhere from five to fifteen years. When compared to high-end products that might endure a 30-year lifespan, they are quite short in duration.

That is not to say you can’t get more life out of the windows, but you’ll have to settle with cracking frames and moisture buildup between the panes.

Builder-grade windows also have a shorter warranty period than high-end ones (usually no longer than three years).

Upgrade from builder grade windows

If you’re currently residing in a house with builder-grade windows, replacement is a must.

There is a slew of benefits with upgraded windows, from energy efficiency, to durability, to beauty. It’s a no-brainer. Upgraded windows are leaps and bounds above builder-grade windows. They will save you money, last longer, and make your home beautiful.

Saving You Money with Energy Efficiency

First of all, a quality window helps to improve your home’s energy efficiency, which lowers your heating and cooling bills.

And here in Texas, that’s a big deal. It gets sweltering in the summer and, if this past February tells us anything, it can also get frigid in the winter.

You can install windows with multiple panes and Low-E laminate to maintain a stabilized temperature in your home. Your air conditioner and heater will work less to keep the temperature just right, ultimately saving you money.

Upgraded windows also provide a tighter seal for sound transmission from outside, making relaxation or sleep less difficult. Depending on where you live, this could be a huge benefit.

Durability and the Life of the Windows

Unlike builder-grade windows, upgraded windows are known for their durability because of their sturdy frames. They are made out of materials that resist rotting and warping and will last for years to come.

They also protect against the sun’s harmful UV rays, so your house won’t need to be repainted as often.

Depending on the windows you choose, you may upgrade your house and add a degree of assurance by selecting hurricane and impact-resistant windows.

Beautiful Windows to Compliment Your Home

To put it bluntly, upgraded windows look great. Homes with these windows stand out in a neighborhood amongst the other houses.

You can select from various materials, including vinyl or aluminum frames with accent hues that will go well with your décor.

If you’re feeling brave, consider adding a bay window or two. You may also choose to install custom large pane windows to really open up a space.

Whether you’re looking for a bay, single-hung, double-hung, awning, or casement window, there are so many options when it comes to upgrading your windows throughout your home. Let your creativity do the work!

Ready to Upgrade Your Builder Grade Windows?

Low Emissivity and Nearly Transparent Windows

If you want a window that will last the test of time and function well in any climate, then it’s essential to invest in high-quality windows.

Builder-grade windows are made with lower quality materials than upgraded models, which means they may not perform as expected or can break down quickly due to weather damage.

If you decide to upgrade your builder-grade windows, many benefits include increased energy efficiency, durability, and sheer beauty.

Your home will be more comfortable year-round while reducing your utility bills, so upgrading is worth considering for all homeowners who care about their residence’s long-term value!
